Proper Care of Your Flat Screen TV (Part 3)
In my last couple entries we spoke briefly regarding a few simple tips to care for and properly handle and maintain your new plasma or LCD flat screen TV. Now let’s talk a little bit about how a proud owner can properly protect their high-tech investment.
People will spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars to get their hands on their dream flat screen TV, only to plug it directly into a wall outlet without any protection from power spike surges or lightning strikes. Purchase a quality surge protector with a built in power switch and a reset button. Don’t waste your money on a cheap surge protector with only electrical plug-ins. Any good reputable surge protection unit will have phone line or ethernet plugs, as well as surge protection for your modem and coaxial cords, so every cord leading to your precious flat screen will be covered from electrical spikes. The pricing of these advanced surge protectors (around $25 to $45 dollars) is nothing in comparison to what it would cost to replace your valuable electronics.
Another important and often overlooked tip is to ensure you understand how to properly clean your plasma or LCD screen. Avoid using items such as dust rags or old cloth, which can tend to scratch the TV screen. Instead, dust gently with soft non-abrasive cotton, or more preferably, a chamois. Most flat screen manufacturers will include a high quality chamois with the television. It’s best to only use this cloth for the TV screen and nothing else, and to keep it somewhere where it will avoid dust or exposure to chemicals.
In regards to cleaning agents, avoid chemical cleaners, soap or alcohol sprays or any types of aerosols. Just barely moisten your chamois or soft cloth with distilled water, and lightly wipe the screen down, again being careful not to rub too hard.
With these few tips, you will be able to avoid any accidents, keep your TV properly cleaned and cared for, and you’ll be able to continue watching that big bright screen of entertainment joy for many years to come.
